Because the bar numbers are centered about their baseline. The reason 
why they in jiba's code looked fairly alright anyway was that he put the 
bar numbers on the spaces between the staff lines instead of ON the 
staff lines.
This resulted in ugly attached stems (much more whitespace on downwards 
stems than on upwards stems).
If you have better solution then speak up :-)
