I don't know see the problem (and I'm a little drunk :-), but maybe it helps if you post a sample?
You don't see the problem in latest cvs because I added the extra offset. But with friday's cvs \score { \context TabStaff \notes { \property TabStaff.Stem \set #'direction = #1 g \property TabStaff.Stem \set #'direction = #-1 g } } the 2nd stem would be farther away from the notehead that the 1st. -Rune
