Actually, I think, it should be

\set A #B = #C
\set A.B #C = #D

because the identifier immediately before the "=" in both cases denotes 
the name of the property.  Example:

\set Staff #'instrument = #"Clarinet"          %%% context property
\set Staff.Rest #'style = #'mensural           %%% item property
