We have highly experimental code that draws notation on a GTK canvas,
if you're interested in trying it out, check out the
buildscripts/guile-gnome.sh script, which fetches all the libraries
required for that. Then, running
lilypond-bin -f gnome <file.ly>
will put a GTK canvas with notation on the screen.
