There is still a different solution: we could add a PDF backend to
LilyPond, where we can put the fonts in directly. This is a
significant amount of work, but it's less work than I thought - I'm
just now reading the PDF spec.
Nevertheless, things would get hairy if we'd have to do glyph
subsetting, and we wouldn't be spending time on LilyPond's core
business.
