make-pango-font-tree really mean. I guess we all have just started from an
example and tried to play around with it to try to figure it out.

Yes. This is quite hazy, and also quite important, so I definitely think it should be included in the manual in some way or another. As a minimum it should be pointed out:

a. that set-global-staff-size must be at the top of the doc
b. that changing both the set-global-staff-size and the pango font tree without changing the value for myStaffSize produces unwanted results

and preferrably also

c. an explanation of the values and parameters, especially the mysterious "20"...

I don't really know enough about this myself, though.

Well, I know less than you, and the average lilypond user knows less than both of us. Could you investigate this and write some doc changes for the current manual?
