At the time we started the project LilyPond didn't export lyrics to
MIDI. Even now it may not be possible to synthesize songs from MIDI
without additional support from LilyPond. For instance, AFAIK there is
no information about the track corresponding to a given piece of lyrics
or about rests in lyrics. Gluing syllables to words without additional
information would be also difficult for languages that require that to
pronounce the lyrics correctly (such as English).

But if information in the MIDI file was complete, it should be possible
(and probably easier) to use the MIDI file for song synthesis. It would
be nice if someone wrote support for this.
