a few days ago, I posted a link to
http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/benchmarking.html
which made me realize that the static pages visitors are most likely
to visit when then don't know LilyPond, are realized with very old
versions of Lily: 1.4, 1.8 -- the most recent being 2.1 in
http://lilypond.org/web/about/automated-engraving/schubert
I saw this also some time ago when I tried to figure out how to make
these examples translateble.
LilyPond has evolved a lot, and maybe the output is better now?
For the Schubert I did some updates with the current "centered dynamics"
piano template, or at least
then some month ago. It was not really good because the new spacing
mechanism placed the dynamics
on the barlines. Otherwise: the benchmarking tells about trying to
follow the original as close as possible.
In the current version, though, it looks again more different from the
original text than in the version
it is displayed on the webpage. How is the benchmarking anyways? Do we
still do this kind of comparement
in recent versions? Or should we just put some third new example (eg for
the 2.10 vs 2.22 versions) which
shows the improvements between those releases?
Should
we consider updating the benchmarks page, or creating a new one (with
comparisons to recent Sibelius or Finale versions, for instance)? Or
maybe we could (if a few guys have some time to do it) eventually
create a few more pages, including the "features page" which was
planned on http://lilypond.org/web/devel/participating/feature-page
Comparence to new programs should be good, Sibelius has improved a lot
(eg included the spacing mechanism)
but feta is just much much better!
Is this a good idea or a waste of time? -- could be both :)
I might see to put some time into it after updating the translation, but
rather only in autumn/winter.
