I've been watching this thread, and successive Lilypond versions, to see
what's happening about the straight flags that I offered to sponsor in the
first post of the thread.
A lot of work has gone on, and in the latest version, 2.11.65, it's possible
to produce variant flags with Scheme code. I don't have the time or energy
to learn Scheme programming to produce the kind of flags I originally
mentioned; they are not included in the examples in the "What's New"
document for 2.11.65.
My original offer still holds: if someone can write the machinery to produce
early classical straight flags within Lilypond, at a reasonable cost, I'd
consider sponsoring it. By "within Lilypond" I mean with a system broadly
comparable to the existing ancient notation (mensural etc.) in the degree of
programming knowledge required.
