How was
  \lilypondfile
handled?  IMO, \lilypondfile and \lilypond should have the same
behavior, but it doesn't make sense for \lilypondfile to be for
inline use.

What about somethine like
  \inlinelilypond
instead?  This would also avoid the compatibility problem.


Other than this nitpick, I love the suggestion -- I've
occasionally wanted to include notation inline, but since it never
worked I always ended up rewording my paragraphs so it wasn't
necessary.
