Well, yes and no. I'm generating top-grade publications (critical editions) 
myself to be printed and sold (just gave a presentation about this very 
subject three hours ago at the LAC conference). Most things are working very 
well, but there are several rough edges, where you need to find workarounds 
(fixes would be better;-)   ).

BTW, I'm applauding your efforts and also that you can be paid from a research 
project!

It would be quite interesting to see your list of things that need to (or will 
be ;-)  ) improved for professional editions.

Here's my list of things that I need for editions, and that need fixing:

- -) Part combination absolutely unusable
- -) Footnotes (for editorial comments)
- -) Automated lyrics to cue nots (" cue lyrics")
- -) Order of bass figures exactly as entered
- -) it needs to be easier to move dynamics inside the staff (I have a 
workaround, but that needs the y position for every dynamic sign moved!)
- -) dynamic spanners with hidden line should ignore collisions with the 
invisible line.
- -) ETC...
