Thanks that was it.One final thing on this, it seems to compile without \score { } even with the \layout { } still there.
So is it 'valid' as an example to just use a @Lilypond [etc etc] << { music and staff stuff } >> \layout { Score context stuff } @end lilypond construct without enrobing it all in a \score { }? James
