If you take a look at
<URL:https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xpdf/+bug/943195>, you'll
notice that Dmitry uploaded a backport for Raring to his respective
PPA. Would it be feasible to check that out, and if it works, report
enthusiastically to the bug report? Or so...

Well I looked at the links and found the stuff in the queue but when I try to download it and compile it, there is no deb file to add directly that I can find. It complains about missing dependencies when I run configure.

I don't have the space cycles at the moment to work out why (as what it is complaining about does exist on my system - X, Motif and Freetype - although in classic non-friendly developer way, there are no such literal packages as Motif or 'Freetype' (it's probably called free2typelib2013-gtk_0907.88 or something bonkers like that.
