OK - I've checked the stable/2.18 branch with make, make doc, make test. 
One minor change was needed to get it to compile, and so it now looks ready 
to go.

I'll kick GUB off in about 30 minutes, but will actually do the upload 
tomorrow morning and the announcement tomorrow afternoon.
