Apparently I got many things wrong with my message. :)

I had a look in the code and in scm/lily.scm midi-extension is set to 
'mid' on Windows and 'midi' on other systems.
I didn't notice that because I use LilyPond almost exclusively on Mac 
and Linux, and sometimes I use on Windows MIDI files that were produced 
on Mac.

I'm sorry for the noise.
