Hi Kieren,

thanks for raising this old idea of ours and intending to finally try
following through with it.

I'll probably not be in the position to really invest time in it for
the foreseable future, but of course I'm taking significant interest in
it and will help out with questions about openLilyLib integration.

For now I have a few suggestions on how you can break the task down to
subtasks that are more manageable and may spark more immediate
discussion:

a)
How could such a stylesheet system be organized a) in the ways e.g. CSS
is organized and how a "publisher" might organize house styles (e.g.
aesthetic styles, score types etc.)

b)
Investigate what is already there. I've attached the current state of
the manual of a "stylesheets" package, where especially the "span"
module should be of interest. This module is also heavily used in the
scholarLY package.
If that attachment doesn't get through I'll upload it somewhere.

c)
You should also take into account the features of the notation-fonts
package.

As a primer on how openLilyLib works I recommend the newly-populated
urssite https://openlilylib.org where (only) the top layer with the
general introduction has more or less been completed recently.

As said I won't be able to properly engage in this project but I will
happily answer questions if possible and give (hopefully not undesired)
advice when possible.

Best
