Frankly, I have no idea what you all are talking about.

\score {
  \new Staff \with { midiInstrument = "violin" }
  { c'' c'' c'' c''
    \set Staff.midiInstrument = "pizzicato strings"
    c'' c'' c'' c''
    \set Staff.midiInstrument = "violin"
    c'' c'' c'' c''
  }
  \midi {}
}
Works fine without moving the Staff_performer.
