Thank you, Guy, that worked! That is really handy to know for these types of hymns. And thank you, Elaine, for giving me the links to where that tool is found in the manual (it was in a separate email!)
Jean, I am contracting to make scores for a hymn database website called hymnary.org. I have always used Sibelius in the past though, which is why Lilypond is new to me and I am still barely understanding it.
Thank you all for your help!
Best,
Kira

Kira,

In your music code, for /VoiceTwo (the alto voice) where you have r16 (for the sixteenth rest) and r4 (for the quarter rest) for that voice, you should be able to replace both the r16 and the r4 with an alternate method for specifying a rest: <pitch><duration>\rest

So

r16

to

d'16\rest

and

r4

to

d'4\rest

This will tell Lilypond to put the rest below the lowest line of the treble clef staff. You can specify any pitch you want (e.g., c' or b) to create "space" between the lowest note of /VoiceOne, etc.

Does this NOT work for you?

Regards.

I should specify I’m on version 2.16.2. It’s for  work, and that’s the version they need.

Another question! Sorry for the photo: I’m in a cafe with no internet at the moment. I need to get the alto rests at the end of the bar out of the way of the soprano. The alto is \voiceTwo, the soprano is \voiceOne. What I found online was for multi measure rests of a long duration, these aren’t the whole measure and are very short.
