LilyPond has a well-defined syntax with meaningful elements and
meaningful order.  If you just throw in stuff you see elsewhere until
things compile, chances are that you are combining them in a bad order.
While you don't have a solid grasp of the meaning of its elements, you
will have better success by starting with templates (like the
Frescobaldi editor offers) rather than creating stuff from scratch.

Alternatively it may make sense to work through the "Learning Manual" of
LilyPond once (or at least its first chapters) to get a first grasp of
how things are supposed to fit together.
