Before, is this a file that you previously compiled using earlier 
versions? did you try running convert-ly on the file before compiling it 
using 2.24?

For the first question, try changing the context to a \score context. I 
don't know if that worked in previous versions, but this snippet 
https://lsr.di.unimi.it/LSR/Snippet?id=307 shows that the \override 
VerticalAxisGroup.remove-first variable is set in the score context.

For the second question, it appears that defaultBarType was renamed to 
measureBarType, you could give that a try.
