We also need something for modern typesetting that simply ignores all
multiple spaces in input and treats all punctuation as normal characters
(current lout behaviour + previous compress proposal). It should be
the easiest to implement in any case (or is it a subset of one of the
proposed choices?).
The general scheme seems a good idea, that would leave room for managing in
a later version say the peculiar french punctuation (whose main problem is
to stick `:' `<<', `>>', etc next to the appropriate neighbouring word
with an unbreakable space).
