Yes, I was thinking more in terms of Postscript using unicode when I
made that statement.
Of course unicode is just fine on the input side for a formatter. You
just can't use it for output, because the output is really glyph codes
rather than character codes. This is where ligature support would be
lacking.
I guess it makes no difference if you are using a PostScript encoding
for the output. My PostScript knowledge is limited but I assume it can
handle large glyph encoding somehow.
I think Ted is right about the can-of-worms... The OpenType specs make
an interesting read for these issues.
