FYI.  I'm not sure if this is in the docs or if I have learned this
from e-mail exchange with Jeff, but Lout uses functional language
exactly because it was initially conceived with an interactive system
in mind; not the LyX style frontend, but the system where all
on-screen layout is also driven by the actual layout engine.

While your idea about checkpointing engine state is aimed at changing
the _text_ on the fly, there are also a lot of other interesting
aspects of interactive Lout, e.g changing _definitions_ on the fly,
which brings a lot of interesting problems to solve.
