I don't know what the problem is here.  I can't really go back and
test 3.17 now.  Perhaps you could get 3.24 from my web site and
install it instead:

    ftp://ftp.cs.usyd.edu.au/jeff/lout/lout-3.24.tar.gz

However I have to say that 3.17 worked perfectly well in its time.
This seems like a very peculiar problem.
