This would not be hard to do, but someone would need to convince
me first that it would actually reduce the number of runs needed
in a significant number of cases.

Was that my reason?  I don't remember - but I certainly do
think that ?? is a much better marker than _.  If the
marker string is changed in this way, files bsf and dsf
would need to be updated as well as the binary.  Not that
that would be hard.

My own preferred way to speed up Lout on large documents is to
work on one chapter at a time.  See the User's Guide, Section
3.8, for the method I use.  I'm using it right now, on the
current revision of the Nonpareil language specification, and
it works pretty well imo.

I agree that -r is very handy (thanks Mark for pestering me
into it).  I would have done it years ago if I had realized
how handy it is.  I've also become a user of the blanklinescale
feature for program texts (another of Mark's brain children).
