I started experimenting using utf-8, then I realised that I shouldn't and went to iso 8859-1, may be during the switch I created something weird.

verification, the version of Lout I have is 3.39
Works for me under WSL too.

Can you make the actual file available?  May be you have some funny
whitespace or something...
