  if anyone out there has advice on upgrading the above, i'm all ears.
i'm already using tcpdump-3.9.8 and the corresponding libpcap-0.9.8
locally, and they seem to work fine.  moving up to tcpdump-4.0.0 and
libpcap-1.0.0 appears to be a non-trivial change so i might spend a
little more time on that unless someone wants to save me the trouble.

  also, i'm intensely interested in the newer version of the boost
libraries.  at the moment, the GPP and ltib refer to boost-1.31.1
while the latest version available at http://boost.org is a
significantly newer 1.37.0, so i'm going to take a look at that as
well unless someone else has already done that.
