Well, I just posted a question along these lines, and the answer is

Freescale runs its own LTIB internally, and the public CVS LTIB is
always "behind" the most current Freescale work. At least, that is now
I understood the situation.

So, start with the official BSP, and go from there...

As to your other questions, in my experience, there is no getting
around having to maintain your own BSP, keeping it up to date with the
latest kernel and user space packages, keeping track of license
issues, keeping the BSP reproducible, and so on. It is a lot of work!

There are many ways to do this, so my advice is, pick a system that
you understand and feel comfortable with, because, in the end, it will
be your responsibility.
