[lwip-users] [lwip] Ping

Hi!

I'd just like to give my comments to what's going on...

As you might have noticed, I haven't been very active on the list
lately. The reasons for this are mainly two: 1) lots of other stuff to
do 2) I've felt a certain responsibility for the lwIP list which meant
that I tried really hard to give good advice and reply to a lot of the
messages. Looking at the threaded message archives shows my name on
nearly every other row. This was not only too ambitous on my part, but
may also actually have slowed down progress on the list. In any case,
the growing number of unread mails in my lwIP mailbox (around 300!)
haven't made it easy to find the time to go through them...

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the CVS issue:

As I see it, we have two main alternatives right now, either going with
Sourceforge och Savannah. Troy Melquist's generous offer to host a CVS
tree is very much appreciated, but I would be a bit hesiant to hosting
the CVS at a company that already sells an embedded TCP/IP stack. Not
because I question his intentions - on the contrary. Judging from Troy's
mail, the main motivation is goodwill for his company and the ability to
test other stacks, which are honest intentions. The problem is that it
is an obstacle for people who are working for competing companies to
join the lwIP development.

So I would recommend setting up the CVS in a "neutral" location.
Sourceforge has some problems as discussed earlier, especially that is
it hard to export a project if we would find the need for that. Savannah
is driven by the FSF, which have their own political agenda. They seem
to (hesitantly) accept BSD-licensed software, though, and they are not
likely to stop us from exporting the project if we would like to do so.
Also, I do not think that the risk of the FSF going "out of business" is
that large.

After inspecting the license stuff at both sites, I don't think that the
current lwIP license is a problem. The reference to the "modified BSD
license" actually means the current lwIP license. The unmodified BSD
license is the 4-clause license that includes the "advertisment clause".
So I think we are OK.

I have already set up an lwIP project at Sourceforge, but we can easily
drop out if we choose to go for Savannah. Leon is in the process of
registering the project as Savannah.

What do you think? I am more inclined towards Savannah right now.

Troy: it is very interesting to hear that you wish to devote your people
to the lwIP development! It is also interesting to hear that you have
found that your competitors are using lwIP code but dissapointing to
hear that they are not honoring the copyright. Do you have any more
information about this?

Cheers,

/adam
