I am new too.  yes simhost basic works with root access. But it doesnt work totally. u will have to modify to make all the features work.
I am stuck somewhere too. I am trying to use LWIP stream socket apis, but im failing in connect.

I am 'using' it. I.e. I have tried it a few days ago, but I had no problem
what so ever, and being a lwip newbie, I probably can't help much. The only
thing I found out, was that I had to run it as root, as the tun/tap interface
does not support normal users.
Apart from this, the web page example, and ping was running fine.

Can you perhaps try to stop dosemu/qemu?
