pidfile problem?

When running the latest monit from CVS, monit dies with:
Sep 27 17:26:54 menzoberranzan monit[24211]: monit: Error opening
pidfile '$piddir/monit.pid' for writing -- No such file or directory
Sep 27 17:26:54 menzoberranzan monit[24211]: monit daemon died
pid file location: /var/run
is spit out during configure, but it looks like something isn't getting
set correctly anymore.
