Ah, that's a showstopper if I haven't seen anyone before :)
Unfortunately I cannot test this on Solaris (no solaris box). Do you
think you can hack it together using __USE_BSD as you mentioned so it
works on Linux and Solaris. 

Maybe Rory can test it on FreeBSD?
