Thanks for the detailed bug description!

This is a known problem, but I don't know that anyone has particularly
sat down to analyze it; there are like 5 tests in the testsuite that
trigger it (numbers 54-58), if anyone wants to...

Unless it's a symptom of the problem Matt Johnston was working on --
Matt, does your patch for test 52 have any effect on tests 54 through
58?
