You can do this at the moment.  What you propose is the same as tags,
natively supported by Monotone.  Anyway, if tags didn't exist, you'd still
easily implement it by creating a new certificate using:

    monotone cert <revid> nickname foobar

And then using 'c:nickname=foobar' as the revision selector.
