I'm not going to make any pronouncements about what might be
implemented "someday" here, but I can't see user-selectable happening
any time soon. Making this variable creates security concerns,
exciting new failure modes, and makes life much harder for 3rd-party
software; any one of these three problems would be pretty compelling
all by itself.
