Can't you just disapprove the changes that added the new repository to them? My initial thoughts of how to fix this would be to grab those changes and move them into a new branch, and then disapprove them on the main branch.

What's more, the existing project really had the wrong branch name
(which made it easy for me to make that mistake).

So, if you have disapproved everything and the branch is clean again, you could rename the branch after this, and mark the old one as "dead" or whatever, right?
