Too much detail, too much a retelling of the code in words, and
some of it is already in the comments, which is more important.
The design aspect can be mentioned when we reach the goal of
a single opendir().

Essential is the URL of the bug.  (If you want, you can add more
details and reasoning about the patch there.)

One little flaw remains: if you type the first few letters of
the inaccessible dir and then <Tab> and <Enter>, the dir does
not get highlighted.  But we'll leave that for now.

Next step is: get rid of the opendir() for KEY_WINCH.
