I applied your proposed patch and these errors disappeared.
Also there are no stray files in the root directory of the current
drive created any more.
So I'd call this problem solved.

Did you check the value P_tmpdir. For me it is empty. Thus temporary file may
be created in the present working directory and deleting process will be
successful. However, I do not think that the fact that P_tmpdir is empty is
not what John hope.
