Follow-up Comment #1:
This is a regression between 3.8.0 and 3.8.1. I thought that imagesc would
call the equivalent of "axis image" which is "axis tight; axis equal".
Perhaps you could run the following test in Matlab and report the results.
y = 1:10 ; x = 100*y;
imagesc(x, y, cos(x'*y))
get (gca, 'xlimmode')
xlim
pbaspect ('mode')
daspect ('mode')
