Follow-up Comment #1, bug #45316 (project octave):
It's very likely, that you haven't installed the dependencies to build the
GUI. You can check this with "grep GUI config.log", do you see
Build Octave GUI: yes
"apt-get build-dep octave" is one quick way to get them on debian based
distros but could pull old or incomplete dependencies. I would suggest
http://wiki.octave.org/Building_for_Linux_systems
And please attach your config.log if you need further assistance why the GUI
wasn't build
