Follow-up Comment #7, bug #51388 (project octave):

I'm unable to see any problem with the test code from comment #2 when running
in the GUI or with octave-cli with the current development version of Octave
(hg id 85f1d31956c0).  For the test, I created two directories, /tmp/dir1 and
/tmp/dir2, each with 1000 subdirectories.

I'd be glad to look at this problem if someone can create a test case that I
can use to reproduce it.
