Confirmed, this is the case for one or two weeks now.

In my experience the full-screen undocking can be often avoided by first
dragging the tab to the left-bottom corner (or just to the bottom) of the
variable-editor pane, and as soon as it shows there as a reasonably-sized
widget it can be dragged to the desktop where it retains the reasonable size.
