Follow-up Comment #93, bug #53006 (project octave):

OK, I pulled and tested that changeset, thanks.

The Documentation search now works from the build directory.

The crash bug is still present, which is in the program code.  I deleted the 

doc/interpreter/octave_interpreter.qch 
doc/interpreter/octave_interpreter.qhc

files to test what happens:

[Dialog box]
"Could not copy help collection to temporary
file. Search capabilities may be affected."
[select OK button]
[Dialog box]
"Could not setup the data required for the
documentation viewer. Only help texts in
the Console Widget will be available."
[select OK button]
"address@hidden ~/octave/bug/53006 $ octave exited with signal 11"
