Follow-up Comment #19, bug #53526 (project octave):

@Rik, I'm attaching a diff file (not really a changeset) in which I did what I

It did require a bit of code change.  This is only for testing whether the
translation issue is solved for those two particular objects.

I can't see any affect from changing "Default column width" or "Default row
height" on the appearance of the Variable Editor tables (before or after
patch), so I'm not sure the attached changes are exactly what should be done. 
When I select "Apply" or "OK" in the Preferences... window the Variable Editor
table does go through some visual adjustment, but the row/column sizing
remains roughly the same.
