Follow-up Comment #14, bug #49119 (project octave):

Currently there is no such user preference, but looking at comment #7 and
comment #8, I have the impression that there should be one. And yes I think it
should be possible to change this from the interpreter thread (we can also
open a file in the gui editor via "edit foo").
