Follow-up Comment #12:

Is there a way to change a GUI preference (something stored under
~/.config/octave) from the interpreter thread?  I'm adding Torsten to the CC
list since he will know.

If the answer is yes, then we could add a new GUI preference which controls
whether setting a breakpoint in the Command Window automatically opens the
file in the Editor window.  During the BIST test we could use an
unwind_protect block to disable this setting and then restore it to whatever
it was (most likely "on" since people seem to expect this).
