Follow-up Comment #71, bug #54235 (project octave):
The configure help says
--without-fontconfig don't use fontconfig library, OpenGL graphics will
not be fully functional
Given that OpenGL is already disabled, we don't need FreeType. You could try
adding this to the growing list of options to configure.
