Follow-up Comment #85, bug #54235 (project octave):

If it were me, I would examine the timestamps of all files that were included
in the tar file. They should all be identical, and unchanged from the metadata
in the tar file itself. List the files that have newer timestamps.

If all you want to do is get to a finished build, then I would try


touch doc/interpreter/octave.dvi
touch doc/interpreter/octave.pdf


And maybe touch other files that fail to build under the doc directory, and
keep repeating gmake until it finishes with success.

If the build has moved on to the docs, that means you already have the octave
binary itself built successfully.
