Follow-up Comment #9, bug #54405 (project octave):

I don't think its worth the switch.  Even a cursory look in oct-stream.cc
shows we are using special values, like octave_idx_type = -1, to communicate
information through return values.  Hunting all of those down seems of
questionable worth when for the majority of users it will never be an issue
(using 64-bit index vectors so 2^63 elements are possible).
