Details:

exist accepts empty matrix as first argument in Matlab but this is an error in
Octave

In Matlab R2018b


>> exist ([])

ans =

     0.0000e+000


In Octave 4.4.1


octave:2> exist ([])
error: wrong type argument 'null_matrix'
error: exist: NAME must be a string
